Hello, my name is Kenneth Ellis Hughes, Sr. "LIFE HAS BEEN GREAT!" I was born to Lester D and Inell Hughes on April 25, 1947, in Los Angeles, CA. I quietly departed this life on December 8, 2021, with grace, courage and dignity, while at home surrounded by the love of my family.
I had an amazing life! I attended public schools; Willowbrook Elementary, Los Angeles, CA; Lafayette Elementary, Oakland, CA; Lowell Jr. High and McClymonds High Schools, Oakland, CA
I professed Christ Jesus and joined Pilgrim Church of Christ at the age of 3 years old.
My Life Accomplishments:
- Joined the Military (United States Air Force) in July 1965 and retired with Honorable Discharge in 1969.
- Earned a 1st. Class FCC Broadcasting License
- Earned a California POST Professional Peace Officer Certificate (Department of Justice)
- Former Deputy Sheriff for Alameda County, CA
- CEO of New Life Recovery Center, Oakland, CA. Licensed by the State of California to provide substance abuse treatment, group home for boys.
- Ordained Pastor
- Doctorate Degree in Theology; Participated in church organizations, substance abuse treatment and transitional housing for over 25 years.
- I carried a spirit of excellence and a strong work ethic with me throughout my life.
Some of my fondest memories were piano lessons with Magnolia Jones, playing the keyboard, shooting marbles, lecturing and helping others.
About Kenneth
Kenneth had an unbreakable bond and love for his mother. He credits his parents for teaching him how to live, work hard and love God. It was the only thing that could bring true satisfaction,k peace and to love others. he was the biggest cheerleader for Cheryl and his family in everything they were involved n.
Kenneth had an incredible ability to find happiness in his daily activities. Anyone who knew him was touch by his kindness, humor and outgoing personality.; He had a passion for life! He was truly a peacemaker and was always a source of positivity. His smile and determination to see any obstacle, though, will be missed. His influence on people will be treasured in the lives of those who knew him as he helped to meet their needs by encouraging them to have faith, hope and love. "To know him is to love him"
Kenneth was an avid outdoors man and spent much time working in his garden, nurturing succulents, plants and flowers; Enjoying their serene beauty. His life was as beautiful as the flowers he loved and tended to. He observed that our spiritual lives need to be planted and tended to as well.
Family and close friends will remember scriptures he quoted near the end of his race: Psalms 119:71-72 "My troubles turned out all for the best - they forced me to learn from your textbook. Truth from your mouth, means more to me than striking it rich in a gold mine...
Kenneth lived a servant's life and modeled a servant's heart. He was a shining light and has been one of this wife's closes living example of Christ's unconditional love for us all. By the Grace of God, he finished well! A life transformed as evidenced by the forgiving grace and transformative power of God's love.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bishop Lester D. Hughes, Sr., his sister, Larcedia
Simmons and Joyce A. Winn, his former wife ad the mother of his first three children (Kimberly, Kenneth and Jill)
Kenneth is survived by his mother, Inell C. Hughes (Johnson); His loving wife, Cheryl Hughes, Brothers, Lester (Mary Grace, Brazil), Jonathan (Deborah Wilton, CA; Sisters, Dollye (Alvin, Huntsville, AL), Deborah (Esley Simmons, Wilton, CA), Frances (Darryl Robinson, Shreveport, LA) and Chandrea of Shreveport, LA; His children, Kimberly, Kenneth II, Jill, Kourtnay, Eboni and Cavenia. He also leaves to cherish memories, his loving in laws, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of family and close friends.
